“RANGI” a portrait painted on silk of Jon Stevens/Singer. Entered into 2014 Archibald Prize

This year I entered my first Archibald with this portrait of Jon Stevens, painted on silk. It did not make the finals but I have to say that painting this portrait was a beautiful challenge and the most satisfying work I have done to date.. I was determined to produce and enter a portrait this year because I felt I had finally found my true medium and had a subject with depth and a story to tell. The process leading up to the actual painting was not without its difficulties but I kept my focus. Over the course of 5 weeks I worked every day in my sunny studio, drinking tea and building layer upon layer of dye with a very fine brush to bring the painting to life . I feel such an affinity with my silk; it breathes and talks to me as I paint. That may sound a little flaky but it feels very real. The beauty really is in the creation and the energy and synchronicity that occurs when your are fully present with your task.

I’m now itching to begin another portrait…maybe a selfie…

Until next time, enjoy the flow people.
